As a young medical student, he journeyed across South America and witnessed the stark reality of poverty, hunger and disease. He opposed what he believed was the capitalist exploitation of Latin America by the United States of America. To this end he joined President Jacobo Árbenz. US Assistance in Árbenz’s eventual overthrow at the behest of the United Fruit Company reinforced Che’s ideology and brought him to two people with whom he would reshape history forever.
